ÿÿÿÿBALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2000--Answering the demand for Internet-based services and increased bandwidth, Alcatel today demonstrated an advanced optical technology that dramatically increases the capacity of today's network. ÿÿÿÿWith its Nx40Gb/s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, being shown at the Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) show, March 7-9, Alcatel is demonstrating multi-bitrate, multi-wavelength and multi-span transmission over a single fiber. Alcatel plans to conduct field trials, both in the U.S. and Europe, of the technology in the second quarter of this year. ÿÿÿÿThis Nx40Gb/s DWDM technology provides two key benefits in the optical core.ÿ First, this advanced technology enables single-band transmission of 1.6Tb/s per fiber, a doubling of network capacity. The current benchmark for single-band transmissionÿ is 800Gb/s per fiber. The second benefit, which can be achieved in the future, is the optimization achievable by a fourfold increase in capacity switched through an all-optical cross-connect (OXC), switching wavelengths independent of bitrate. ÿÿÿÿ"With its Nx40Gb/s innovation, Alcatel is delivering next-generation networkÿ solutions that provide customers the capability to manage exponential growth in broadband traffic," said Paul Harrison, vice president, Transmission andÿ Optical Product Strategy, Alcatel. "This breakthrough technology dramatically enhances spectral efficiency, creating greater capacity to handle the Internet's explosive growth." ÿÿÿÿ"We expect to see the 40Gb/s market starting its growth late 2001," said Voltaire Cacal, a senior analyst for RHK, Inc. "It is very important for manufacturers such as Alcatel to begin demonstrating such technological 40G/channel DWDM capabilities as soon as possible. This will allow them to work closely with service providers early on so that technology introduction issues may beÿ addressed much more quickly." ÿÿÿÿAlcatel's expertise in optical transmission, including its integrated portfolio of terrestrialÿ and undersea networking solutions, as well as its advanced optical components, position the company at the leading edge of the global marketplace. Alcatel is a leading supplier of DWDM technology, and is building more than 40 optical fiber networks worldwide. |
