MCI WorldCom says serious about European wireless
NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - MCI WorldCom Inc. , the U.S. long-distance telephone company set to buy smaller
rival Sprint Corp. (NYSE:FON - news), said on Tuesday it plans to aggressively target the European wireless telephone
market through investments in spectrum or acquisitions.

``We're dead serious about wireless in Europe, just as we're dead serious about wireless in this country -- both fixed and
mobile. We think it's going to be a tremendous opportunity,' MCI WorldCom Chief Executive Bernie Ebbers said at a CS
First Boston telecommunications conference in New York.

Clinton, Miss.-based MCI WorldCom said it is participating in the auction for so-called 3G or third generation licenses for
advanced wireless services in the United Kingdom.

It also may pursue acquisitions, Ebbers said.

``We will certainly be there when Orange (Plc) comes around,' Ebbers said. ``We intend to pursue whatever opportunities
make sense for the company to fill out our portfolio in that wireless area.'

MCI WorldCom's planned $115 billion acquisition of Sprint will give it a new foothold in the U.S. wireless market through
Sprint PCS' (NYSE:PCS - news) coast-to-coast wireless telephone network.

In addition to traditional wireless services, MCI WorldCom also has invested in so-called fixed-wireless technology that
transmits voice and high-speed data services without the need for copper telephone wires or fiber optic cables.

The fixed-wireless technology will allow the company to serve rural areas where it would be too costly to lay cables or offer
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services that run over copper telephone lines.

MCI WorldCom said it will test the fixed wireless services in Dallas and Boston over the next month and it will offer the
service in several cities later this year. It expects to be in 100 markets by the end of 2001.
