Your point of view on that subject has been stated many times in the past in different ways. Was it Gates that said he didn't think a computer would ever need more than 64K of memory ? How about the official who recommended closing the patent office in about 1890 because all the inventions had been invented.

<It all comes down to the following question: Why would you need to network the process control devices?>

I suspect there are many reasons including two big ones;
Control and monitoring of the process from anywhere(assuming proper security in place).
