LCC International, Inc. isSelected by Nucentrix to Support Its Wireless Broadband Offering March 8, 2000 07:01 AM MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2000--LCC International, Inc. LCCI , one of the world's largest wireless telecommunications consulting firms announced today that it has been selected by Nucentrix Broadband Networks, Inc. NCNX , a provider of wireless broadband Internet Protocol (IP) services, to support them in their efforts to obtain permanent licenses from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to provide two-way fixed wireless broadband Internet, voice and other IP services throughout their service areas.
Nucentrix, who controls up to 196 MHz of MMDS spectrum (FCC licensed radio spectrum in the 2.1 GHz and 2.5-2.7 GHz range) in 90 medium and small markets in the central United States, plans to use the licenses to deliver wireless IP services to businesses and homes.
Nucentrix has selected LCC to provide the technical engineering and design support needed for the FCC application process. LCC's initial engagement which includes RF design and site acquisition services is valued at approximately $.5 million.
LCC will support Nucentrix's recently announced Cisco Powered Network using Cisco Systems Inc.'s wireless Vector Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (VOFDM)-based WT2700 Wireless Technology Suite. LCC was named to Cisco's technology team last quarter when they announced their VOFDM technology for wireless broadband Internet services. Nucentrix recently was named the first service provider to join this Cisco team. VOFDM will deliver two-way data, voice, and video communications over the air at high speeds.
Commenting on the strategic nature of the contract with Nucentrix, C. Thomas Faulders III, LCC's chairman and chief executive officer said, "We are extremely pleased to be the consultant of choice for Nucentrix. Supporting their efforts to deliver high speed wireless Internet and other IP services is both exciting and a great challenge for our technical professionals. The opportunity to work on cutting edge technology such as VOFDM gives us an opportunity demonstrate one of our areas of strength -- taking new technology and adapting it to real life situations. We are looking forward to Nucentrix receiving authorization from the FCC to provide wireless IP services and then assisting them with the design and deployment of their network."
Carroll McHenry, chairman and chief executive officer of Nucentrix said, "When evaluating the talent that existed in the wireless industry, LCC was an obvious choice. Their diverse skill set and proven ability to deliver high quality technical solutions will be instrumental as we work to deploy leading edge technology solutions to small and medium businesses, telecommuters and consumers on a single network platform."
Today's announcement follows last quarter's announcement by Cisco that it was joining forces with ten leading companies to develop open technology standards based on VOFDM technology for wireless broadband Internet and other IP services. VOFDM technology overcomes the issues of interference and multi-path fading that can occur in wireless environments, allowing for a more robust and reliable service offering. Other members of the alliance supporting VOFDM open standards are Broadcom Corporation, Texas Instruments, Motorola, Samsung, Toshiba, Pace Micro Technology, Bechtel Telecommunications, KPMG Consulting, LCC International and EDS.
