I had piles of down time on the internet yesterday, several years ago I worked for a larger company whose computer system communicated with Dallas via phone lines. On big solar flare or storm days computer response time always went to Hell due to communications problems. Seems there was(& still is in many areas) a microwave link between wire or fiberoptic & satellites - on both ends!
