Dear Robin: biz.yahoo.com
The Special Edition Dell Dimension will start at $5,999 for 256 MB of RDRAM, a 30 GB hard drive, 64 MB DDR GeForce video card, 12X MAX. DVD-ROM, 8X MAX. CD-RW and a SoundBlaster Live!(TM) Value sound card among other features.

biz.yahoo.com
In addition to the Intel Pentium III 1.0GHz processor, the HP Pavilion 1G PC includes the Intel 820 chipset, 128MB PC800 RDRAM, 7200 RPM 40GB hard drive, 8x maximum speed DVD drive, HP CD-Writer Plus CD-RW drive, Creative Annihilator 4x AGP graphics card with the NVIDIA GeForce chip with 32MB DDR memory, Creative Sound Blaster Live! soundcard, Polk Audio AMR2 speakers, V.90 56K modem, Intel 10/100 BaseT network card, one-touch Internet keyboard and scroller mouse.

The HP Pavilion 1G PC has an estimated U.S. street price of $3,499.

I have been following the Dell catalog for months now as planning on getting a new computer this year. What I have found is this:
1. The UPGRADE from 128 to 256 RDRAM is VERY EXPENSIVE
2. The UPGRADE to 64mb DDR memory is also VERY EXPENSIVE
3, The Dell also has a 12X DVD ROM compared to the HP 8X
that too is an expensive upgrade
4. While HP has a much larger HD that actually is not expensive compared to above.
So all in all, I believe that the DELL system you compare to the HP system is a far faster computer and likely ONLY needed by SERIOUS Gamers.
Only other reason I can think of for buying Dell is their reputation for reliability and service. Its outstanding and HP like the market today--SUCKS. JDN
