Re: Fixed Broadband Wireless LMDS Notes via ALA/NN
Thread- Fixed broadband wireless is getting more interesting all the time. I don't quite have the feeling I did with DSL about six years ago. I get more comfort out of the rash of xMDS announcements recently. Maybe at some point soon, xMDS will be included in the HFC and DSL figures being published. IMO, that's when you know it's for real.
I have to say, in all the CC's I listen to, xMDS is still at the excitement stage. But no significant revenues are being generated by any of the xMDS equipment players that I know of. Right now, xMDS is a footnote with an exclamation(!) point only. I imagine Q1 2000 will be the same. Hopefully they become significant by Q2 2000. Then the equipment companies will start breaking out the xMDS revenues.
I did some editing to four recent press releases below.
What I find them most amusing are Wall Street analysts and reporters constantly writing the epitaph on that tired, old, broken down, ATM switch of Newbridge's, the Mainstreet 36170. Which now appears to be coming back to life. It's a miracle! Legacy networks are not dead.<g> And another revelation. SP's are tight with their money.<g> -MikeM(From Florida)
PS Thanks Frank and Stephen. Nice to be appreciated.

Alcatel and Prime Companies, Inc. to Conduct Field Trials of National LMDS Broadband Wireless Network in March 2000
DALLAS, and YUBA CITY, Calif. Mar. 8, 2000--Alcatel and Prime Companies today announced that they will conduct field trials of a Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) high-speed broadband wireless access network for small- and medium-sized businesses beginning in March of this year.
As part of the agreement, Alcatel will supply its EVOLIUM LMDS Solution, a broadband wireless access solution, to LMDS Communications, Inc., a subsidiary of Prime Companies, and will assist with the installation and management of the LMDS (28GHz) network.
The first field trials will take place in New Castle, Pennsylvania, with additional trials scheduled for later this year. LMDS Communications has a corridor of LMDS (28GHz) A band licenses in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio, and is ranked in the top 10 of LMDS A band licenses holders in the U.S.
``As LMDS secures a foothold in the U.S. market, Alcatel's broadband wireless access solution has proven in 40 extensive field trials and commercial deployments around the world that LMDS is an easy-to-use and affordable solution for the broadband access needs of small to medium enterprises,' said Dave Kimzey, vice president and general manager, Wireless Access Products, Alcatel USA. ``The modularity and flexibility offered by Alcatel's LMDS solution makes it possible to bring high-speed data communications, including voice, data, Internet and video conferencing, to businesses quickly and cost effectively.' ____________________

BT Selects Newbridge Networks for Nationwide Broadband Wireless Access Network in Belgium
Market Leading Newbridge LMDS Solution used by BT Belgium to Reach More Customers and to Capitalise on the growing Market of Broadband Wireless Access Services for Voice, Data and Internet
MAIDENHEAD, United Kingdom/BRUSSELS, Belgium--March 1, 2000-Newbridge Networks and BT Belgium today announced that Newbridge's market leading broadband wireless access solution has been selected by BT for a nationwide network roll-out in Belgium. The technology, known as LMDS or 'local multipoint distribution system', will allow Belgian corporations and SMEs to by-pass the bandwidth bottleneck of the local loop, granting high speed access to BT Belgium's sophisticated broadband services.
BT Belgium is a wholly owned subsidiary of BT plc and is the number one challenger to the incumbent telco in the Belgian business-to-business communications marketplace. The new network is part of BT Belgium's aggressive plans to increase the reach and scope of its services. The company will be building on the wide range of advanced voice and data services that it already offers to small and medium enterprises, government agencies and multinational companies.
Jan Vorstermans, Acting CEO of BT Belgium said, ``We are convinced that broadband wireless access will be leveraged by many Belgian corporations and SMEs in order to increase their competitiveness through high performance voice, data and Internet communications. BT Belgium selected Newbridge because, unlike other vendors, they can provide us with the added advantage of a totally packaged solution. This is a further step in our preparation for the pending broadband wireless access licensing procedures in our country.'
Newbridge will provide a complete broadband access infrastructure, including telecomms switching equipment, radio base stations, transceivers and customer premise equipment. The network will enable BT Belgium to offer a range of new services including broadband LAN internetworking, voice services and premium quality IP-based Virtual Private Networks (IP-VPNs).
Newbridge has created a highly integrated system with the goal of reducing both start-up costs and on-going network ownership costs. The radio base station technology is incorporated within the Newbridge 36170 multi service platform (MSP) - the industry's best selling broadband switch - an approach which delivers marked economies in comparison to having to implement switching and radio elements separately.
The choice of the 36170 MSP as the integration vehicle allows the reliability and multiple service classes of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) to be extended via the wireless connection to the customer premise. It also means that the wireless portion of the network is brought under the control of the Newbridge 46020 Network Manager, leading to increased reliability and greatly speeding up the provisioning of new and existing services. ______________________

A base station, consisting of the Newbridge 350 IVSN, the industry's most scalable, flexible multi-access service platform, and point-to-multipoint transmitters and receivers, is the central location that collects and switches all customer traffic within a given wireless coverage area. It is also the linking point between the customer and the network backbone.
Customer premises equipment includes transceivers/antennae and flexible network interface units, which support a full range of services. The Newbridge network and services management solution manages both the wireless and wireline portions of the network, providing a range of billing, statistics and maintenance support. |
