That is not what I meant by colorful characters. I was only there to sleep a few hours. During that time I met a panhandler who told me his whole game plan for the street. He truly enjoyed the life. I observed him the next day on the street being very successful at it. He tucked his long blond hair up under a stocking cap and looked like the most innocent kid but was probably in his twenties. He knew all the street narcs by first name and pointed them out to me. I was amazed by their cover. I tried to speak to one of them about it and he got really weird, so I walked away. One huge guy was threatening another guy in the dorm room because he wouldn't give him a cigarette. The guy with the cigs told the desk clerk he wanted a private room. The desk clerk came and threatened to take his African jungle heritage out on the bully. I thought the bully was going to wet himself. Instead he pleaded insanity and claimed he was just released from the state hospital (I believed him). A gay man hit up on me. Finally, another guy going to Mexico offered to share his car. I had a bus visa but I took him up on it. Once in Mexico we went separate ways I camped at my leisure for the winter on a beach in the tropics.

A few hours of the night twenty-five years ago and that is all still fresh as if it was yesterday.
