News Corp. in Talks for Microsoft to Invest in Satellite Unit

By Kim Chipman

New York, March 8 (Bloomberg) -- News Corp., the media company of Rupert Murdoch, said it is talking with Microsoft Corp. about the world's largest software maker and other companies taking a stake in its new satellite-television business.

News Corp. and Microsoft declined to comment on details of the talks. News Corp. said last month it may combine the satellite-TV businesses and related holdings into a separate, publicly traded company.

A partnership with News Corp. would give Microsoft more access to the global satellite-TV market. News Corp. and others are betting that satellite will become a top deliverer of high-speed Internet service worldwide. Microsoft already has invested in the lucrative cable industry, which is gearing up to provide Web access and other digital services throughout the U.S.

News Corp. is in talks with other companies, including Yahoo! Inc., the No. 1 Internet search company, about taking a minority stake in the satellite business, a person close to the matter said last month.

Microsoft shares rose 2 11/16 to 95 9/16. News Corp.'s American depositary receipts rose 1 7/16 to 64 13/16. One ADR equals four ordinary shares.
