If the price of soap goes up, the BLS will just assume that the American people will rend their soap from lard and potash. If toothpaste prices increase, Americans will use baking powder as a substitute, correct? When prices of those substitutes increase, Americans will simply stop bathing and brushing their teeth, but of course they won't need to use expensive services such as doctors or dentists as a result.
