NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Weeks before AT&T Corp (NYSE:T - news)
launches
what could be the largest U.S. initial public offering, Daniel Hesse, president of its
wireless
unit, is expected to announce his resignation on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal
reported.

Hesse plans to join an Internet start-up called TeraBeam Networks, which is developing
technology to beam data by laser
through the air, the Journal reported on Thursday.

Hesse will become TeraBeam's chief executive and is expected to get four percent to
five percent ownership stake in the
company.

AT&T is expected to name Mohan Gyani, the former chief financial officer of AirTouch
Communications, to succeed Hesse,
the Journal said. Gyani joined AT&T's wireless last month as its chief financial officer.

People familiar with Hesse's decision say it reflects, in part, his disappointment at being
passed over for top spot of AT&T's
new Wireless Group last December, the Journal said. John Zeglis was named chief
executive.

Hesse joins the growing number of top lieutenants who quit under the two-year reign of
AT&T Chairman C. Michael
Armstrong. Part of the blame for the drain is attributed to Internet start-ups that offer top
leadership positions, the Journal said.
