Semtech Announces Its Dual-Port HotSwitch Controller, Ideal for USB Power Distribution
The SC5826 Broadens Semtech's Leadership Position in the Rapidly Expanding USB Peripheral Market
NEWBURY PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 2000-- Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC - news), a leader in Power Management ICs, today announced release of its dual Universal Serial Bus (USB) power distribution switch designed to meet the USB specification 1.1.

The SC5826, the newest member of Semtech's family of HotSwitch(TM) products, provides safe hot-plugging of USB peripherals into two USB ports. The device protects peripherals, such as digital cameras, by bringing up the power in a controlled manner, preventing current in-rush damage.

USB power distribution switches are N-channel MOSFET switches with low on-state resistance, for minimal power loss across the switch. The SC5826 features short circuit current limiting, at a value of less than 1.6A, well below the USB limit of 5A. Additionally, the device provides internal thermal shutdown and under-voltage lockout.

The device allows independent enabling of the two channels with either active high (SC5826-1CS), or active low (SC5826-2CS), logic level. An error flag is provided on each channel to signal the system if any fault condition occurs.

In addition to USB self-powered and bus-powered hub applications, the SC5826 is ideal for powering today's root hubs in desktop PCs and workstations, notebook PCs and peripherals. It is available in a tiny 8-pin SOIC package that saves valuable board space.

``The SC5826 is very exciting because it offers industry-leading performance in a very small package,' said Eldin Lougee, product marketing manager for Semtech's desktop power management products. ``It also enhances Semtech's position in the rapidly expanding USB market.'
