Online Education Leaders From Around the World to
Meet in Washington, D.C, March 20-21 for Second
Annual Blackboard Summit

Business Wire - March 09, 2000 08:23
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 9, 2000--

Speakers include Rep. Johnny Isakson and Arthur Levine, President
of Teachers College, Columbia University

More than 350 of the world's opinion leaders and experts in the use of the Internet to
expand the power of education will meet in Washington, D.C., March 20-21, to discuss
ways that higher education institutions can ramp up their efforts to adopt online learning
quickly, efficiently and economically.

Blackboard Summit 2000 -- "Realizing the Vision: Scaling Online Education from the
Classroom to the Institution," will bring together educators, industry experts and
policymakers - some from as far away as Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and The
Netherlands as well as Canada. Topics will include: the overall impact of the Internet on
education, integrating online and campus learning, e-commerce in education, and course
marketing.

Speakers will include Rep. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), a member of both the House
Education Committee and the Congressional Web-based Education Commission;

Arthur Levine, president and professor of education of Teachers College at Columbia
University; and Scott Jaschik, editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education.

"The Blackboard Summit is a unique and important forum in education," said Lou
Pugliese, CEO of Blackboard Inc. "It has been recognized as an industry greenhouse of
discovery and innovation, designed specifically so leading experts in Internet-based
teaching and learning solutions can meet and share their ideas. For many of them, the
Blackboard Internet infrastructure has been the organizing principle for online learning."

Jeshua Pacifica at Virginia Tech, who participated in 1999, said, "Last year's Blackboard
Summit was a milestone event in the growth of online teaching and learning. You get a
lot of perspectives on issues because we all bring to the event strengths in different
areas. I can tell you, it had a significant impact on our operations." More than 300 people
participated in last year's Blackboard Summit. The keynote speaker was FCC Chairman
William E. Kennard.

This has been a pivotal year for online education. The use of the Internet in higher
education, as a supplement to the classroom and for distance learning, has blossomed
throughout the world. The worldwide higher education market exceeds $700 billion and
the growth of the Internet is having a strong impact on its development.

Among the scores of institutions represented at the event will be: The American
University, Arizona State University, Boston University, Dartmouth, Florida State
University, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, Maricopa Community
College District and Dallas County Community College District (two of the nation's
largest systems), Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, Princeton, the
University of Illinois and the University of Tennessee.

The Summit is co-sponsored by a number of organizations. The platinum sponsor is
PeopleSoft and gold sponsors are Microsoft and Oracle. Other sponsors include Dell
Computer, Pearson Education, NextEd, Converge magazine and HorizonLive.
