OT on firewalls:

There's another advantage to running a linux gateway/firewall system, you can run IP masquerading and get free multiple internet connections. The cableco's will let you have multiple IP addresses, but charge $5-$10 a month per extra, as you might expect.

If you go the linux router route, you may as well set up a home network, you're going to be most of the way there anyway. 100bt ethernet stuff is astonishingly cheap these days, NICs are $10-20, hubs <$50, you can get an 8 port 100bt switch for $200 or so, I think. And p133 systems can be had used for around $100 these days.

I stumbled on this article yesterday:
IT abuzz over Linux-based routers zdnet.com. It refers to linuxrouter.org, on how to run a minimal linux router/firewall . The linuxrouter site recommends a p100+ for a 100bt system; I figure it's better to use a PCI based system at any rate.

Cheers, Dan.
