Yes, that's true; she may have thought he'd just give it up. On the other hand, as long as she stuck to the street, he could easily have followed her in the car.

Actually that makes good sense: she thought she'd made a breakaway, and in fact the killer didn't react immediately, but spent a few minutes considering what to do. He came to the decision that she had to be silenced, because she knew him and would report him for whatever it was he'd tried to do to her. So he started up the car again, caught up with her, jumped out, and killed her.
