Remember Sal and the New Roman Empire, Harvey? I guess it's the decline and fall already. Internet time and all that.

"Somebody asked: 'Did anyone even consider Microsoft?'," says Keith Benjamin, a general partner at Highland Capital Partners who was one of the 12 VCs present. He declines to name the others that were in the room, but he says the assembled VCs answered, "No, of course not."

Somewhat oddly, I'd say that brings us back to Netscape. Not that Netscape didn't make mistakes, but I think what the whole browser war showed was that there was no way there'd ever be another hot startup selling Windows software. It was against the Empire's laws, but that made life pretty boring and the action all moved out to the provinces.

Then there's the unindicted co-conspirator and the Rambus fiasco, but that's another story, still being written. Good investment, RMBS.

Cheers, Dan.
