Mr. Michael McInnis reports
Philip Morkel has been appointed managing director of the company's South
African subsidiary, Champion Industrial Minerals SA (Pty) Ltd. Mr. Morkel
brings a wealth of project management experience to the company and, in his
new capacity, will be responsible for all aspects of the development of the
Farim phosphate project in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa.
Mr. Morkel is a South African citizen. He received a BSc degree in chemical
engineering in 1981 from the University of Cape Town and a masters in
business leadership in 1990 from the University of South Africa, Pretoria.
Since graduation, he has gained significant managerial and operational
experience, having completed over 50 projects in sub-Saharan Africa for the
mining, chemical and oil and gas industries. Mr. Morkel joins Champion
after 10 years with Fluor Daniel South Africa as project director.
Farim is a large and high-grade sedimentary phosphate deposit. The Farim
project has progressed to an advanced stage of technical due diligence with
respect to satisfying the requirements of a major financing in South
Africa. In full production, output from Farim will reach an annual rate of
1.5 million metric tons of phosphate rock concentrate grading 32 per cent
to 34 per cent P205.
