Out of curiosity I called the above to inquire about ordering a 1 GHZ computer, either Athlon or P3.

Gateway: Has 1 GHZ Athlons in stock, can deliver system with 20 Gig. hard drive in 3 days. Has no P3's above 700 mhz, has no date on when to expect any.

Dell: In final stages of testing 1 GHZ P3, estimates "about" a month before systems start shipping. Would not answer my question as to wether or not they actually have the silicon in stock.

IBM: Can deliver 1 GHZ Athlons in about a week. Have no 1 GHZ P3 parts, state they expect to start getting small supplies in "about a week", system lead time is "about a month".

Compaq has 1 GHZ Athlons now, can deliver systems in one week. Has no P3 parts and salesman could not give me a date on availability. They also have no 800 mhz P3's, but could get me a 733 system in about a week.

Called two local computer shops, neither had 1 GHZ parts, but one indicated Athlons were available from local distributor and he could fill order within a week.

Second distributor was funny as hell, he said "if you want a 1 GHZ P3, I can fax you a picture of it, but dont hold your breath for the real thing".

Is *ntel actually serious about this? In reality P3 gig. parts will not hit the retail channels until the fall.

Nice thing about a paper launch is you can get the processors by fax?

I also didn't realize IBM would also soon have the Athlon-1000.
