To me the X-Box is more about reputation and future positioning than revenue...I expect AMD will get a few $s per chip and in addition will increase utilization of its fabs (an important issue). However its level of credibility will increase dramatically; it may improve its chances of getting MSFT's support for Sledgehammer (really critical IMO in getting good corp. sales for this chip); and it may help drive a wedge in WinTel....three very major wins, I think!! And I bet this console will be out by Xmas, 2000 and not 2001. MSFT is in a state of transition...they are anxious to move into new fields....they are reinventing much like CSCO and Intel. There will be a very big push to get this out asap...I bet they are hoping to get it out by this fall. It will be tough but MSFT is big with lots of resources.

Ted,

You make some good points, and in retrospect when I looked back at my points, I didn't means to sound completely negative. I'm excited about the prospect of Sledgehammer support and also....reputation-wise, it could be fantastic. I sometimes forget that MSFT makes hardware, but in addition to mice, they make a number of quality gaming (input) devices for the pc. MSFT has also tried hard (not too successfully) to become a force in pc game development and publishing. Therefore, I would agree that Christmas 2000 may be entirely possible.

I noticed game software publisher and developer stocks were also up this afternoon. This may be good for the entire sector.
