I believe amzn, yhoo, aol, cmgi and a few others started off in the penny's range. [...]

Per the links given below, the respective IPO prices (not adjusted for subsequent stock splits) were:

AMZN: $18.00
YHOO: $13.00
AOL: $11.50
CMGI: $8.00

Amazon IPO price per share: $18.00

Q: When did Yahoo! go public and at what price?
A: Yahoo! went public on April 12, 1996 and the IPO price was $1.08 (adjusted to reflect stock splits: 3 for 2 September 1997, 2 for 1 August 1998, 2 for 1 February 1999, and 2 for 1 February 2000).

Thus if one backs out the adjustments for subsequent stock splits, one gets an original IPO price of $13 (actually, one gets $12.96, but this is probably due to $1.08 being rounded off from $1.08333333)
