Nextel rises nearly 12 pct, helped by Ignition
NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Shares of wireless communications provider Nextel Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NXTL) climbed nearly 12 percent on Thursday, piggybacking on the formation of an investment group looking to capitalize on the growing demand for wireless data services, an analyst said.
Bear Stearns analyst David Freedman said Reston, Va.-based Nextel rose as its capabilities in the red-hot wireless data sector were brought into focus by the formation of Ignition Corp.
Nextel rose 15-15/16 on Nasdaq to 152-15/16, a new all-time high.
Ignition was launched Thursday and is led by a group including Brad Silverberg, who ran Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows division for five years, and Steve Hooper, a former top lieutenant to cellular pioneer Craig McCaw.
The group aims to make investments in the wireless Internet arena, and Freedman said Nextel is the only player in the group ready to roll out a significant wireless data network. |
