My strongest memories of the first time I was shot at are the sounds. Not at all like the movies: the bullets hitting the pavement sounded like smallish firecrackers going off, the ones in the air were like very fast bumblebees, a deep intense whine. I don't recall hearing the actual shots at all.

All of these things are best considered from a well-sheltered area.
