Best defense is to keep your system as clean as possible and don't have a lot of extra garbage that you don't need on. Use the uninstall in Control panel->add/remove programs when getting rid of things. Scan disk/Defrag will help to an extent, but once they really start running bad, slow, crashy, locking-up constantly, the only thing that will bring 'em back is to Backup, Fdisk, Format, re-install the OS and all the programs. I use mine heavily as most folks on here do, and I "re-do" my system every 4-5 months.
Got tired of trying to fix things that couldn't be fixed.
