You have raised some plausible ideas with the "outdoor" scenario. I started to wonder whether a "Best Buddy" would be able to catch & overpower Suzanne under the type of circumstances you described so I went to the site for "Best Buddies International" to find out more about the Best Buddies program.
bestbuddies.org

Among other things, it said, "Best Buddies is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with mental retardation by providing opportunities for socialization and employment." So, I think it is reasonable to assume that while mentally handicapped in some way, a Best Buddy would not necessarily suffer from any physical impairment and might be able to catch and overpower Suzanne.

Next, I asked myself whether Jim Van de Velde would be able to catch and overpower Suzanne. By his own admission, Jim is a jogger. He is certainly taller and bigger than Suzanne so it seems reasonable that he could have caught and overpowered her.

If Suzanne actually turned her back on the killer after exclaiming, "I can't believe you're doing this..." it would seem more logical that she would turn her back on someone who she considered mentally inferior than on her professor who she would consider more of an equal.
