ted, With one year to go I expect that AMD is fielding a socket based cache containing Athlon as a candidate to MSFT and MSFT wants to be sure it works. MSFT has done a lot of code optimisation for the AThlon and is probably doing the same for the P-III to maximise the throughput of each system. By next year AMD copper as well as cache on chip will be fully qualified and mature....or failed? The basic Athlon obviously beats the basic P-III(with no cache on chip) and so I expect the socket based cache on chip Athlon will also beat the P-III in the same package.
