Dear Junk: The following article calls the rumor "far-fetched." Although it was posted in the news area of MLs site yesterday, I did not check there after the market closed:

Rumors Make The Rounds That Cisco Will Be Added To Dow Industrials

MAR 09,2000

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of Cisco Systems Inc., the leading manufacturer
of computer-networking equipment, reached a 52-week high Thursday on
far-fetched rumors that the company's stock would be added to the formula used
to calculate the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
However, Dow Jones & Co. (DJ), which calculates the Industrial Average and
publishes this news service, declined to comment on the rumor and told CNBC not
to read anything into the refusal to comment.
The list of 30 stocks used to calculate the Industrial Average was last
changed in November, when Home Depot Inc., Intel Corp., Microsoft Corp. and SBC
Communications Inc. were added. The editors of The Wall Street Journal select
the stocks used in the index. AT&T Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and International
Business Machines Corp. are also among the Dow 30.

So... it looks like this CSCO DOW rumor can be filed in the same folder as the HWP buying out CPQ rumor about a month ago.
