The Southern Agrarians, whom I greatly admire, are certainly the heirs of Jefferson and his idea of an independent yeomanry. The father of American manufacturing was Jefferson's opponent, Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton understood the importance of manufacturing, and as Secretary of the Treasury was the author of the famous "Report on Manufactures" (1791). Jefferson disliked both cities and factories, he didn't care for the sort of communities that resulted, and he didn't think factory workers would be free men. You need to read those history books, Terry, it's not enough to collect them.
