Financial Post 5.2.97: Kissinger defends Freeport actions

By RICHARD SIKLOS
The Financial Post

NEW YORK -- Former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger came to the defence of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. yesterday over its part in the Busang controversy.

Kissinger is a director of Freeport, the U.S. mining giant that sent Bre-X stock into a free-fall with the revelation that its own tests at the Indonesian site turned up "insignificant" quantities of gold.

"All we did is do due diligence, and I think it was a reasonable thing to do," Kissinger said after the annual meeting of Hollinger International Inc., where he is also a director. "I mean we didn't put any money into it."

From his perspective as a director, he said, "the board had no reason to criticize anything that was done."
