I see no reason why Suzanne would choose to meet a ride a few blocks away from Phelps Gate instead of at her apartment.

Well, she still had to drop off the keys. Perhaps the person she was meeting lived a few miles away; had to get out the car and spend ten minutes or so getting to the campus. She might have thought it'd be quicker to arrange for him to park near Phelps Gate; she'd find him when she'd got rid of the keys.

Maybe the dollar bill crumpled in her pocket was a routine action in case she needed change to make phone calls.

Probably the dollar bill had been in her pocket for months. Often when I'm given a small amount of change I put it in my pocket rather than in my wallet. And it stays in my pocket till I remember it.

As for not taking money with her: she could have been meeting someone who she expected to pay her tab for anything they might eat or drink, or someone who said he planned to take her back to his apartment.

If so, I believe that if she'd felt even slightly worried about the intentions of Mr X, she'd have taken enough money with her to hire a cab to go home in, if necessary.

Don't think Mr X could have been Jim. If it were, presumably the reason (or excuse, on his part) for the meeting would be to discuss her thesis. She'd have taken along a notebook and a pen, at least.
