Thursday announced it has received a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) from the Food and Drug Administration to market its new Telescopic Plate Spacer(TM) (TPS(TM)).

The company plans to begin selling the product in the United States in the second quarter of this year.

The TPS is an expandable titanium spacer intended to replace one or two spine vertebral bodies that must be removed due to cancer. Metastatic spinal tumors are most often located in a vertebral body, and the corpectomies (removal of the vertebrae) performed to remove the tumors result in destabilization of the spine.

The TPS device, intended to correct and stabilize the spine following a corpectomy, is designed to allow the insertion of bone graft material.

David C. Mercer, chairman and chief executive officer said: ``The TPS device combines the functions of an anterior plate and a vertebral column spacer, incorporating our patented telescopic feature. Its unique design allows the screws to access the best quality bone in the vertebral bodies above and below the corpectomy.'

Mercer continued: ``We believe the TPS device will appeal to both orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, as there are no other FDA-cleared devices available that function like the TPS implant for treating corpectomies. Many surgeons currently are limited to creating a bridging construct out of products that are not designed specifically for this application.'

Interpore Cross International is a medical device company that designs, manufactures and markets spinal implant devices and synthetic bone and tissue products on a worldwide basis. The spine products are used to treat degenerative conditions and deformities of the spine. The bone and tissue products are used in orthopedic, oral/maxillofacial and ophthalmic applications.
