What am I smoking? Gilder dubies, baby. The same ones I've been smoking for years. He knows his stuff, you can choose to believe him or not.

The technology of Nexlink, Teligent and Winstar is not widespread enough yet to retain it's position against such a disprutive technology. It's not like GSM vs. CDMA in wireless, where GSM is already entrenched and hard to displace (although it will happen). The "wireless fiber" market is still not yet mature so companies can be easily beaten.

Why wouldn't a company want a better, faster, cheaper technology?

But, you're right, it won't happen right away. But, it's coming quickly. And public companies trade on projected future earnings. If analysts realize new technology will overtake them even years from now, watch out below.
