[GTE and Standards]
Bob --
I think you're the only one who listens to my droning on about standards. I'll see if I can have you canonized. :)
I decided to check GTE's web site tonight for anything on the subject and whaddayaknow there was a whole section on something called "Residential Gateway." The most important comments were those relating to standards and may help us understand GTE's comments about not choosing a non-standard solution.
Residential Gateway, or RG, was a consortium made up of representatives from Research Center, GTE, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Bellcore, Reltec, and B&C Consulting and they concluded their study in July of 1996. I have no idea if it has any influence or if it's one of those documents someone writes and no one reads.
Cheers!
Pat

<<< The purpose and charter of the RG Group was to develop this report which focuses on the RG approach to deliver and manage information flexibly to and from the home. For this vision to be accepted, a standard architecture must be adopted. The RG Group will not identify a standard architecture, but rather develop a concept and identify a set of design principles that embody the RG approach. The RG represents a specific application of the work ongoing in DAVIC, ATM Forum, EIA, VESA, and IEEE802.14. The RG is not meant to compete with, but integrate into, these implementation groups. >>>
