The reason why Suzanne may have taken the time to check her e-mail at all that night is because it's just part of a college student's routine nowadays.

I really don't think so. It's not like seeing the light on your answering machine flashing. As I've said, I'm as addicted to the Net as they come, but in her circumstances I wouldn't have checked my mail. I'd have gone out, dropped off the keys, come home, poured a glass of wine and sat down to read and reply at my leisure.

btw, did Suzanne have an answering machine? If not, she may have told people to email messages if they called and she didn't answer. In any case, I think it's admissible to speculate that she logged on hoping to find a specific message from a specific person. Then, reminded that she'd failed to reply to her friend's request for the loan of the GRE prep books, she responded to that message.

Then did she call the person from whom she'd hoped to hear?

Yes, the police checked the emails. How far back? And did they simply ignore innocuous messages? If Suzanne were planning to meet her killer that night, obviously she didn't feel she had any reason to fear him, or she wouldn't have made the appointment. So--in this scenario--none of any emails sent to him by her would have been disturbing.
