As I've said, I'm as addicted to the Net as they come, but in her circumstances I wouldn't have checked my mail. I'd have gone out, dropped off the keys, come home, poured a glass of wine and sat down to read and reply at my leisure.
Yes, but what if you knew you were going to be out for the evening? You might check your e-mail, even if inconvenient, just in case there's something "important" you need to take care of.
The problem with assuming Suzanne logged on to see if a meeting were still on for the night is that one would assume there would be other e-mails leading up to it, i.e. "we should get together sometime... how about tomorrow... how about this weekend when my boyfriend will be in New York...", etc. Those are innocuous enough (except perhaps the last one).
I've yet to hear or read anything about this case that talks about suspicious e-mail. I can't think of many people local to a college student that wouldn't be in e-mail contact. A mentally retarded person does fit that category, so, yes, I'll see where that road leads, but as I've said before, I think it's a longshot.
