The problem with assuming Suzanne logged on to see if a meeting were still on for the night is that one would assume there would be other e-mails leading up to it, i.e. "we should get together sometime... how about tomorrow... how about this weekend when my boyfriend will be in New York...", etc. Those are innocuous enough (except perhaps the last one).

Not necessarily. They may normally have communicated by phone, but couldn't on this occasion. That'd fit with a married lover: couldn't call from home. Of course it would also mean that she couldn't have called him, though she might have taken the risk (and made him furious) if she felt she absolutely had to see him.

Was she pregnant? I know this sounds awfully trite, but it'd explain a lot.
