I have an account with American Express and would not recommend it for anyone who is looking to trade stocks on a frequent basis. Their execution is relatively slow and I get the impression they do their best to maximize their profit on trades - they certainly give themselves time to do this!

I take advantage of the "free" trades to buy small lots of stocks that I plan on accumulating over time (kind of like DRIP investing).

For best price and adequate trading I like Waterhouse. For the total investing experience (research, mutual funds, options and stocks) I think E*Trade has a very attractive business. I particularly like E*Trade's marketing of their own index funds. As an investor, I am concerned about the huge marketing expenses (it seems they are giving $100 promotions everywhere!) but think they are well positioned for the future.
