Most employees don't have a server on their desk. Also, suppliers, customers, and other external points of contact don't connect to the corporate server from solely server. They are using desktops and in many cases, laptops and handhelds. I agree with you that companies are more productive in the past. I just think that the government is overstating it as part of their manufacturing a 'budget surplus'. If I was looking for an area of strong productivity growth in 1999, I would have expected it to come from the manufacturing sectors since they were hit hard by the Asian crisis and were the last to recover.
