Dell -- a PaineWebber doll

Shares of Dell Computer (DELL: news, msgs) popped to a 52-week high of 54 1/32 Friday after PaineWebber analyst Don Young raised his rating on the largest direct seller of personal computers to "buy" from "accumulate."

Young said the upgrade was based on a near-term recovery in personal computer fundamentals and a long-term view that Dell will be a category leader in Internet Computing.

"We expect Dell to be one of the big winners from what we are calling the 'Draining of the Server?' or the shift from proprietary servers to industry standard servers," Young said. He believes Dell is currently the low-cost provider of industry standard servers and storage and will likely emerge as the category leader.

Young boosted his price target to $78 from $50 telling investors he expects the psychology shift on Dell to be very powerful and drive a re-valuation of the stock.

Dell shares closed up 13/16 at 51 1/4.
