re: With the new 1G chips from AMD and Intel, does anyone think
CPQ will be selling bunch of higher end boxes?

Those will be curiosities for a while, supply of chips at that speed will be very limited for many months, both from AMD and Intel.

Has anyone read anything regarding whether the 1G chips will be use in "Wildfire"?

Wildfire is an Alpha machine. 1GHz Alpha chips were on the roadmap for mid-year, I think... perhaps with all the Intel and AMD hoopla CPQ will do what they did and put a few 1GHz Alphas out. The trick is to select parts from a standard run with a design center at 800 MHz - but there is a bell curve on speed distribution, so a FEW parts will be much faster. When you're making the volumes that Intel makes, pulling a fair number of high speed parts is easier than with a lower volume part like Alpha but still there should be enough fast ones to stock a few Wildfires...
