I do not like government programs like welfare anymore than you do. I have always believed that what you subsidize you get more of and if you subsidize breeding, fatherless households, laziness and ignorance you will most certainly get those things. But neither do I believe that private charities can do all the things the government can. To a certain extent I believe we need a national policy to address the problems of the people in our society who will not or cannot work in the private sector. It is in our national interest that everyone work or be taught to work (or forced to work, to put not to fine a point on it.) I happen to believe only the government possesses this coercive power. It is in our interest because the children of these people need to see their parents working. How else will they learn about work themselves and thus quit seeing welfare as a "job." I don't completely disagree with Terrence, if you think that then you do not understand my position. My complaint is that he is an idealogue. I do not believe anything taken to the extreme is sensible.
