Art: Vodaphone worked with the Q to develop a CDMA overlay for the installed GSM base. Not sure what type of terminals or handsets were used in that "test". Do remember the results were very positive in technological and economic (cost) terms, but the action taken in the real world, zilch.

The political, bureaucratic and just plain obstructionist power and determination of the Europeans in freezing CDMA out is a wonder to behold - in Europe.

But there is the rest of the world.

That is where a CDMA/GSM chipset would be useful as a transition tool. Dr J has mentioned this from time to time if I recall correctly.

Europe is probably hopeless until 3rd gen puts CDMA on top of the GSM base there - with the figleaf of "wideband" WCDMA under some name and some set of specifications whose only purpose is to be different from CDMA 2000 - not better, but different.

The Globalstar GSM capable phones are in the process of being produced by Ericsson - a situation where Ericsson is not only way way behind in their production but failed to even get the necessary approvals for their use in Europe so that even though a few are available at last, they can not be used. Approval for their use was just recently requested by Ericsson and is expected next week. Should be a major matter of shame for Ericsson. Actually Ericsson is so poorly managed that even MOT, which has a long record of shooting itself in the foot, looks relatively better in comparison. The G* phone non-roll out is a pitiful chapter in Ericsson's history. So far the GSM phone supplier has been little Telital.

(The Q's phones are CDMA and analog for terrestrial, and CDMA "satellite" for satellite mode.)

Best.

Chaz

PS And yes, the Vodaphone/Airtouch powerhouse will be key in how the CDMA/GSM future goes.
