I don't know whether the highend Unix from IBM today is in the same class as the E10K from Sun. Sun also has the E6K line, which is a bit smaller than the E10K, but still quite powerful - and then the line E4K, which is the work horse for many Sun shops. In my visits to 4 dot.com companies in the last month, only one is an IBM shop - the rest run on Sun and these shops have bought millions worth of Sun equipment in the last few months.

I suspect that the IDC report did not compare servers of the same class. A few years ago the largest Unix box from IBM is the fat SP2 node which was configured to have 16 processors - similar to the E6K from Sun. If that's still true, it would be misleading to compare those to the E10K sales only.
