My general understanding of Livermore's life is mostly from another book... "Amazing life and times of Jesse Livermore"...
Mostly I have the same impression as you, except one thing:

what did him in, in my estimation, was the same thing that helped him before; not being able to admit he was wrong...

I would rather think, this was the reason of his second failure, on cotton deal. First one was caused by little experience, last one was not trading-related at all. he apparently was not stable person, having deep depressions and black periods... which IMHO doesn't change the fact that he was great trader and plenty of his observations in the tape reading and human behaviour field are still valid.
