Gary, In a recent post I maintained that Dollar Bill Gates and Microsnot are NOT and NEVER HAVE BEEN known for innovation in the computer industry. You seemed to take exception to that and asked for some evidence. Actually, if you talk to virtually ANYONE in this industry you'll find out that this is indeed the consensus.

However, on a more authoritative level, I offer the following quote from a San Jose Mercury News article that the Chicago Tribune printed on 3-6-00. This excerpt comes from an interview with Alan Cooper, the "father of Visual Basic":

"A lot of people think, and Microsoft is happy to let them think, that all great things are invented by Microsoft. In fact, very, very little has been invented by Microsoft. What Microsoft is really good at is endlessly iterating and revving - incrementally improving things that already exist - and those things that already exist are generally acquired from the outside."

This was my point exactly. For MSFT to parade around with a slogan and campaign called "Freedom to Innovate" is highly ironic. They are plunderers and copycats, despite the reputation that their PR department has worked so hard to propagate.

I realize that this is somewhat off topic for a COMS thread but the latest discussion here has centered around PALM and the upcoming "threat" from Microsloth's so-called "Pocket PC". I'll be the first to concur that Gates has VERY DEEP pockets and should not be counted out in the hand-held realm. However, they are certainly LATE and are now operating in a frantic catch-up mode.

GO COMS! GO PALM!
