unclewest: the nomenclature is a bit trying. the words node, neuron and chip get kinda tossed around.

I have to agree with you on that, and this is precisely why it has been somewhat confusing to me. While it may be semantic, I think it is important to define the terms so as to understand clearly what Echelon is doing.

What I was trying to point out is that the protocol may be ported to any chip, it is not exclusive to the neuron chip. To the best of my knowledge this has not yet been done which is perhaps the reason for the wording in the slide you have. So for now the words 'neuron chip' and 'node' can be used interchangeably, but this may not be the case as the technology is developed further by the chipmakers.

The ANSI/EIA 709.1 protocol can be embedded into any processor, from 8-bit microcontrollers to 32-bit microprocessors. For cost-sensitive applications, developers can use Neuron© Chips, a family of microcontrollers optimized for intelligent distributed control applications that include a built-in, interoperable implementation of ANSI/EIA 709.1. Neuron Chips are manufactured and distributed worldwide by Cypress Semiconductor and Toshiba Corporation.

By constructing the model around the node, rather than the chip, they appear to be covering themselves for all LNS operating system implementations, whether based on the neuron chip or not.
