I asked my Trane rep what exactly is it that you put into your equipment that is Lon. He said that it isn't necessarily a chip, that he wasn't sure but he thinks somehow that Lon logic is put into their circuit boards.
I would imagine though that items such as sensors, light switches and such which do not contain circuit boards would have to have the neuron chip. But items such as A/C units which already have circuit boards with some sort of processor on it would not require the neuron chip.

unclewest you are correct that every node(device) requires it's own unique ID#. This is how the central conjtroller knows what is communicating with it.
