Nigel, what you say makes sense (after all, most newspapers make their money that way). However, I am not sure they can pull it off. There are too many companies banking on Net advertising for their business plans to succeed. In the specific case of AOL, the prospect of loss of customers to the Internet and of high churn creates a double danger:

1. loss of revenue from the customer, and
2. loss of revenue from advertisers (since fees will be proportional to the size of the subscriber base)

In order to sanity check some of the advertising assumptions, it would be interesting to compare to other media. If anybody in this group knows how much money is spent in newspaper and/or TV advertising I would appreciate those numbers.

A final point: I don't have a short position on AOL. I do, however, own puts. I prefer to limit my down side and don't have to lose sleep over it.
