We're zone 5 in eastern Ontario and magnolias can and do grow here. I'm not sure if there is a specific variety of them... I've been meaning to buy one or two for our garden for years... so perhaps this spring. We've had quite unusual weather here this week as well. There were a couple of 60+ F. days and the snow was all but completely melted away except in the odd shady spot. However, a storm blew in from the northeast last night and we have about 4-5 inches of snow again and it looks like we'll be getting a lot more over the next couple of days. However, the good thing about this time of the year is that it shouldn't take too long for it to melt away again as soon as we have a warm sunny day. Yesterday I planted a few flats of various vegetable seeds. Today I'll work on herb and flower seeds. This year I thought I'd try to grow early greens such as spinach, lettuce and arugula in a greenhouse area as soon as I can depend on somewhat decent daytime temperatures. croc
