NG, MSFT has cut clones off at the pass, they own win2K and I suspect they will not offer the stripped down version of win2K for the xbox to anyone else, unless the doj says they must do so at a reasonable price?????
Unless the doj makes a start on this now it will become moot due to the snails pace action pace they love to use.
I wonder if the OS will be ROMMED? probably as ROM are big now and it will be stripped of all the extraneous clutter and features it now has.
A linux clone box could be made as long as all the games come in linux and a video chip set with Nvidias capability comes along? In fact the linux solution is the only one that has a chance. SInce a linux solution will be running in a restricted space, on ROM with a game provided GUI it would in effect be a self server in a box and I am sure it is doable. Big problem is that MSFT will "co-operate" with the gamers to make sure there are loads of proprietary windows DLLs etc in there to place as many hurdles in the path of any linux or other OS competitor.
I am sure it will get done on an underground clone basis, if not on a commercial basis. A linux box doing this with the Athlon could be a big shock for MSFT and Intel.
