The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and the Indusind Media and Communication (IMC), a Hinduja group company, on Saturday signed an agreement for undertaking a feasibility study for internet on cable.

The agreement was signed by Mr Joe Grandmaisaon, director, USTDA, with the IMC representative at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci).

Under the agreement, IMC and USTDA will jointly commision a study to work out the feasibility of providing high speed internet access over the optical fibre cable backbone established by IMC.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Grandmaison said that TDA along with OPIC and the US Exim Bank will look forward to joint ventures and strategic partnerships with Indian companies. The focus will be on the small and medium enterprises.

Although access to SMEs is difficult in the given situation in India, the effort of USTDA would be to reach out to the target groups in a meaningful way to help build effective partnerships. He said that there are a few requirments for giving grants under TDA. These include the financial viability of the enterprises, implementation of the project with the help of US goods and services, capability of the Indian partner to fund 75 per cent of the project, and a competitive environment for the enterprises.

On an average, the grant from USTDA would work out to $ 3,50,000. He also added that there is no string attached to these loans which are given to industries across the board including IT, power and telecom.
